Ziwa Ruins (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

Ziwa Ruins are located in the Nyanga district of eastern Zimbabwe and form part of a vast archaeological landscape covering approximately 80 square kilometers. The site is renowned for its complex agricultural terraces, constructed on slopes for irrigation and erosion control. In addition to the fields, there are remains of fortified settlements, pit structures designed for livestock, and stone walls. The site dates back to between the 15th and 17th centuries, testifying to a highly specialized agrarian society. The Ziwa culture was characterized by the efficient use of mountainous topography to produce food for a large population. Today, the ruins serve as a vital research area for understanding Africa's pre-colonial agricultural history. A small on-site museum displays archaeological finds such as pottery and tools, which illustrate the daily lives of the former inhabitants.
