Kasanka Wetlands (Zambia)

Weather…

The Kasanka wetlands, located within Kasanka National Park in Zambia's Central Province, are a globally unique ecosystem famous for hosting one of the world's largest mammal migrations. Every year between October and December, up to ten million straw-colored fruit bats congregate in a small patch of swamp forest known as Mushitu. Geographically, the park features a diverse mosaic of Miombo woodlands, expansive dambo grasslands, and perennial rivers lined with papyrus. Historically, Kasanka was the first Zambian national park to be managed under a private-public partnership, serving as a successful model for wildlife rehabilitation and conservation. The wetlands also provide a critical sanctuary for the rare Sitatunga antelope, which is specially adapted for life in marshy terrain. Today, preserving these water systems is essential for maintaining biodiversity and supporting the ecological needs of the surrounding rural communities.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The Kasanka Wetlands are famous for the mass roosting phenomenon of bats, typically occurring between October and December. During this time, millions of straw-coloured fruit bats flood the area, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle.
🌅
Best time of day
The best time to observe the bats is late afternoon when they depart from their roosting trees in huge swarms. The sunset provides a dramatic light show as the animals head out into the night.
📜
Etiquette
Keep a sufficient distance from the roosting trees to avoid disturbing the bats. Avoid loud noises and bright lights at dusk, as this could disturb the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens are recommended for observing the bats from a distance. A torch with a red filter is useful for returning in the dark without dazzling the animals.
🧭
Getting there
Kasanka Wetlands are located in central Zambia, about 30 kilometres from the town of Serenje. They are accessible via unpaved roads, and a 4x4 vehicle is recommended, especially during the rainy season.
🦌
What to expect
The bat emergence is a spectacle that depends on the weather - during heavy rain the animals often stay in the trees. It is worth planning several evenings to catch the optimal moment.
