Tarim lies in the fertile Wadi Hadhramaut east of Seiyun and is regarded as one of the most important centres of Islamic scholarship in the entire Arab world. The town contains more than 365 mosques, one for every day of the year, and was for centuries a major centre of the Shafi'i legal school and Hadhrami Sufism. Its signature landmark is the Al-Mihdar minaret, a 53-metre mud-brick tower built in the late 19th century and considered the tallest pure earthen minaret in the world. Equally important is the Al-Ahqaf library, one of the largest and oldest Arab-Islamic manuscript collections, holding thousands of rare codices. Today Dar al-Mustafa University attracts students from Indonesia, Malaysia, East Africa and Europe. Architecturally, palace-like residences erected between the 19th and early 20th centuries by Hadhrami merchants returning from Singapore and Java combine traditional earthen construction with colonial decorative elements.
