Yangiyul, whose name means 'new road', lies about 30 kilometres south-west of Tashkent and is a modern industrial town of around 75,000 inhabitants. It grew up in the early twentieth century along the Tashkent-Samarkand railway and was granted city status in 1934. The local economy is built on food processing, above all wine and brandy production; the local Yangiyul Wine Plant is one of the oldest and largest in Central Asia. Textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food industries also play a major role. The town sits in a fertile region of orchards and vegetable plots that supply Tashkent. Thanks to its proximity to the capital and good transport links, many residents commute daily to Tashkent for work. Yangiyul is also an important logistics and warehousing hub for the wider Tashkent metropolitan area.
