Termez lies in the very south of Uzbekistan, right on the Amu Darya border river, and is the hottest city in the country. With around 180,000 inhabitants, it serves as capital of Surxondaryo Province and a major border crossing into Afghanistan; the Friendship Bridge was built by the Soviet Union in 1982 and saw heavy use during the Afghan War. Termez has more than 2,500 years of history: here once stood Tarmita, one of the foremost centres of Buddhism in Central Asia. The ruins of the Kara-Tepa monastery and the Zurmala Buddhist stupa still testify to that era. The mausoleum of the Sufi master Hakim al-Tirmidhi is also an important pilgrimage site. The local economy is based on cotton, pomegranates, salt, natural gas, and transit traffic to Afghanistan.
