Chust is a small town of around 75,000 inhabitants in Namangan Province, in the northern Fergana Valley. It is famous far beyond Uzbekistan for two things: the handmade Chust doppi, those square black-and-white embroidered skullcaps that are regarded as the country's national headwear, and the artfully forged Chust knives, which have been made in family workshops for centuries. The town's history reaches back to the ninth century and is closely tied to the Silk Road. Worth seeing are the Khoja-Akhmad madrasa and several older mud-brick mosques dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Local livelihoods rest on craftsmanship, fruit and grape growing, silkworm rearing, and small-scale textile production. In late summer Chust hosts a traditional crafts festival featuring doppi-making and knife-forging competitions.
