Grand Teton National Park (United States)

Weather…

Grand Teton National Park, situated in northwestern Wyoming, was originally established on February 26, 1929, and now encompasses roughly 1,250 square kilometers of the Teton Range and the valley of Jackson Hole. The park's geology is distinctive because the mountains rise abruptly from the valley floor without foothills, a result of massive tectonic uplift along the Teton Fault starting about 10 million years ago. The highest peak is Grand Teton, reaching 4,199 meters. A significant portion of the current park area was protected through the efforts of John D. Rockefeller Jr., who surreptitiously purchased land to donate to the federal government, leading to the park's expansion in 1950. The Snake River winds through the valley, providing essential habitat for bald eagles, river otters, and beavers. The park is also home to grizzly bears, wolves, and a major bison herd. Geographically, it is defined by the Jackson Hole valley and a chain of glacial lakes, including Jenny Lake and Jackson Lake. It serves as a world-class destination for mountaineering, backcountry hiking, and landscape photography.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Summer from June to August is the best time to see a wide variety of wildlife including bears, moose, and bison. In autumn (September-October) you can witness the spectacular elk rut.
🌅
Best time of day
At dawn and dusk wildlife is most active as they forage for food. Plan your trips early in the day to take advantage of cooler temperatures and a quieter atmosphere.
📜
Etiquette
Maintain at least 100 yards from bears and wolves, and 25 yards from other animals. Never feed wildlife, as it is dangerous and disrupts their natural behaviour.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars with good magnification help spot animals from a safe distance. Bear spray and sturdy hiking boots are essential in the remote mountain environment.
🧭
Getting there
The park is accessible via US Highway 89, which runs through striking landscapes. Numerous hiking trails and viewpoints can be reached by car.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife is unpredictable - even in peak season, no sighting is guaranteed. Enjoy the memorable mountain backdrop and treat every encounter as a special gift.
