Fort Sumter
Fort Sumter, located in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina, is historically significant as the site where the first shots of the American Civil War were fired on April 12, 1861. Built on a man-made island, the fort was part of a coastal defense system but remained unfinished when South Carolina seceded from the Union. When Major Robert Anderson refused to surrender the garrison to Confederate forces, a 34-hour bombardment ensued, resulting in the Union's surrender and the start of the war. Throughout the conflict, the fort remained a strategic objective and was nearly reduced to rubble by intense Union naval bombardments aimed at recapturing Charleston. Following the war, the fort was partially rebuilt and continued to serve as a coastal defense installation until the end of World War II. Today, Fort Sumter is a National Monument accessible only by boat, providing visitors with a somber look at the beginning of the nation's bloodiest conflict. The preserved ruins and museum offer detailed insights into the political and military tensions that tore the country apart.
