Mount Hood (United States)

Weather…

Mount Hood is a potentially active stratovolcano in northern Oregon and the highest peak in the state, standing at 11,249 feet. Part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, the mountain is covered by twelve named glaciers that provide critical water resources to the surrounding agriculture and ecosystems. The last major eruptive period occurred around 1865, and while it is currently considered dormant, it remains closely monitored for seismic activity. Due to its prominence and proximity to Portland, it is one of the most climbed mountains in the world and features the historic Timberline Lodge, constructed in 1937. It is unique for offering year-round skiing and snowboarding on its permanent snowfields. Mount Hood sits within the Mount Hood National Forest, which encompasses over a million acres of diverse terrain, supporting a wide range of flora and fauna across different altitudinal zones.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Located in the Cascade Range, the mountain is easily accessible via paved highways to major trailheads. Public transit options being very limited, driving a private or rental vehicle remains the standard approach here.
📅
Best season
Summer gives the best conditions for hiking lower trails. Winter transforms the area into a premier destination for skiing and snowboarding, while technical mountaineering on the high peak often peaks in the late spring.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Options range from paved paths near the lodges to rugged, steep alpine trails crossing scree and snow. Summiting requires technical glacier travel, involving deep crevasses and a significant, persistent avalanche danger.
🎒
What to bring
For day hikes, sturdy boots and basic essentials are required. Summit attempts strictly demand full technical mountaineering gear, including ice axes, crampons, strong ropes, helmets, and specialized crevasse rescue gear.
🅿️
Parking
Large, paved parking lots are available at major hubs like Timberline Lodge, though they fill quickly on weekends. A Northwest Forest Pass or equivalent fee is often required for parking legally at the main trailheads.
⚠️
Safety
Weather can deteriorate rapidly at any time of year, bringing freezing temperatures and whiteout conditions. Deadly avalanches, rockfalls, and glacial hazards are serious threats for anyone venturing above the tree line.
⏱️
Time needed
Short scenic hikes take just a few hours. Completing a loop trail like the Timberline can take several days, while a technical summit climb usually requires eight to twelve hours of continuous effort starting before dawn.
