Tulsa, located in northeastern Oklahoma on the Arkansas River, is the second-largest city in the state. Known as the "Oil Capital of the World" in the early 20th century, Tulsa experienced a rapid boom that left a legacy of Art Deco architecture in its downtown core. The city's economy has since diversified into aerospace, finance, telecommunications, and technology. Key cultural institutions include the Philbrook Museum of Art, housed in a former Italian Renaissance villa, and the Gilcrease Museum, which holds an extensive collection of American West art. Tulsa is also noted for its music scene, especially jazz and blues, and for the 1921 Tulsa race massacre, one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history. The city's population is around 411,000, with a metro area of over one million. Tulsa is home to the University of Tulsa and several Fortune 500 companies, including ONEOK and Williams Companies.
