Vicksburg National Military Park
Vicksburg National Military Park in Mississippi preserves the site of the Siege of Vicksburg, a major turning point of the American Civil War in 1863. Known as the 'Gibraltar of the West' for its strategic position on high bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, Vicksburg was essential for controlling river commerce. General Ulysses S. Grant launched a series of campaigns that eventually surrounded the city, leading to its surrender on July 4, 1863, after a grueling 47-day siege. This victory effectively split the Confederacy in half and gave the Union full command of the Mississippi River. Today, the park features over 1,300 monuments and markers designating the positions of various military units. A significant highlight is the USS Cairo Museum, which houses a restored Union ironclad gunboat recovered from the river in the 1960s. The Vicksburg National Cemetery is the largest burial site for Civil War soldiers in the United States, containing over 17,000 interments. The park's hilly terrain provides a vivid sense of the tactical challenges faced by both the besiegers and the defenders during the historic conflict.
