Mississippi River Source (United States)

Weather…

The source of the Mississippi River is located at Lake Itasca within Itasca State Park in northern Minnesota. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,475 feet above sea level, the lake was officially identified as the river's primary headwaters in 1832 by explorer Henry Schoolcraft. At the point where the water flows out of the lake to begin its journey, the river is only about 18 feet wide and ankle-deep, allowing visitors to walk across the start of the mighty stream on large stepping stones. From here, the water travels roughly 2,320 miles through the heart of the United States before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. The surrounding area consists of dense pine forests within Minnesota's oldest state park, established in 1891 to preserve the region from logging. As a significant geographical landmark, the headwaters represent the beginning of the largest river system in North America.
