Plymouth Rock (United States)

Weather…

Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts is traditionally regarded as the site where the Pilgrims disembarked from the Mayflower in 1620 to establish Plymouth Colony. Although the rock was not identified as the historical landing spot until 1741 by Thomas Faunce, over a century after the event, it has since become a central symbol of American founding history. The block of Dedham granite was moved multiple times over the centuries and split in two during a transport attempt in 1774, which explains the visible fracture line seen today. In 1920, for the 300th anniversary of the landing, a monumental Doric portico designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead & White was erected to protect the stone. Today, Plymouth Rock is part of the Pilgrim Memorial State Park and attracts millions of visitors annually who come to reflect on the beginnings of European settlement in New England. It serves as a powerful memorial to the pursuit of religious freedom and the courage of the early settlers in North America.
