Georgia Peach Orchards

The peach orchards of Georgia have earned the state its moniker 'The Peach State,' despite the fruit being native to China and first introduced to the Georgia coast by Spanish Franciscan monks in the 16th century. Commercial production surged after the Civil War as farmers sought alternatives to cotton. In the late 19th century, horticulturist Samuel Rumph developed the 'Elberta' variety, named after his wife, which revolutionized the industry due to its durability during transport. Today, production is heavily concentrated in Peach County and the surrounding Fort Valley area, where the fertile red clay soil and humid subtropical climate provide optimal growing conditions. Georgia produces between 40 and 50 million pounds of peaches annually, cultivating more than 40 different varieties. The harvest season, spanning from May to August, is a significant cultural event celebrated by the Georgia Peach Festival. While larger states like California produce more by volume, Georgia peaches are renowned for their superior flavor and remain a powerful symbol of Southern agricultural heritage.
