Lake Okeechobee (United States)

Weather…

Lake Okeechobee, located in the central-southern peninsula of Florida, is the absolute largest freshwater lake in the state and the massive, beating hydrological heart of the entire Everglades ecosystem. The incredibly vast, saucer-like basin covers 730 square miles but is remarkably shallow, averaging only 9 feet in depth. Historically, massive seasonal rains caused the lake to overtop its southern rim, sending a massive, slow-moving 'River of Grass' southward to the coast. Today, the lake is completely encircled by the massive Herbert Hoover Dike, a heavily engineered levee system designed entirely for massive flood control and to support the deeply extensive, highly lucrative sugarcane agricultural operations directly south of the lake.
