The Port of Oakland, located on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay, is one of the principal container ports on the West Coast of the United States. Established in 1927, it was a pioneer in the adoption of containerization, welcoming the first purpose-built container ship in 1962. This innovation revolutionized the shipping industry and established Oakland as a leading trade port. The port comprises three main container terminals and has extensive intermodal infrastructure, including on-dock rail facilities, allowing for efficient cargo movement to the nation's interior. Its proximity to California's agricultural Central Valley makes it a key export gateway for farm products like almonds, wine, and fruit. What is this place?
The Port of Oakland is a major container port in the San Francisco Bay and the third-largest on the US West Coast. It serves as a primary transshipment point for goods from Asia, supplying the entire Bay Area with imported products.
Visiting
The container terminals are not public, but there are several public parks and roads along the waterfront from which activities can be observed. Visitors can typically see the giant container cranes and cargo ships from Middle Harbor Shoreline Park.
Where to view it
Middle Harbor Shoreline Park gives a direct view of the port area and passing ships. Jack London Square with its promenade and restaurants is also an excellent spot for watching port activities.
