California's Central Valley is an incredibly vast, profoundly flat agricultural region that dominates the geographic center of the state. Stretching 450 miles from north to south, this incredibly fertile basin is arguably the single most productive agricultural landscape in the entire world. Despite representing less than one percent of total U.S. farmland, the valley astonishingly produces over half of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts grown in the United States, including virtually all of the nation's commercial almonds, pistachios, and walnuts. This staggering productivity is entirely dependent on an incredibly massive, highly engineered system of dams, aqueducts, and irrigation canals that redistribute water from the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains.

Where to view it
Handy viewpoints are the rest areas along Interstate 5 and California State Route 99, which cross the valley. From bridges over irrigation canals, you also have wide views over the fields.
