Coconino National Forest
Coconino National Forest, located in the highly elevated massive plateau region of northern Arizona, is one of the most incredibly diverse national forests in the United States, spanning nearly 2 million acres. The forest encompasses an astonishing variety of landscapes, ranging from the massive, dry red rock formations surrounding Sedona to the dense, towering Ponderosa pine forests near Flagstaff, and culminating at the massive, snow-capped San Francisco Peaks. These peaks include Humphreys Peak, the absolute highest point in Arizona at 12,633 feet, which is the heavily eroded remnant of a massive extinct stratovolcano. This intense ecological diversity supports a formidable array of wildlife and gives massive opportunities for both geological research and outdoor recreation.
