Emsworth is a highly attractive historic harbour town situated on the northern reaches of Chichester Harbour. Historically, it was a major center for boat building, brewing, and most famously, the oyster industry. At its peak in the late 19th century, the Emsworth oyster trade was immense, though it suffered a sharp decline in 1902 following a high-profile food poisoning incident. Despite this, the town reinvented itself as a premier sailing destination and a hub for high-quality food and drink. The town's layout features a pleasant mix of Georgian architecture and traditional flint-walled cottages. A unique feature of Emsworth is its two large mill ponds, Slipper Pond and Emsworth Mill Pond, which are remnants of the town's industrial past when tidal power was harnessed for flour milling. Today, Emsworth is located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and serves as a vital habitat for brent geese and other migratory birds. The town hosts a lively annual arts trail and remains a beloved location for sailors due to its sheltered waters and excellent marina facilities at nearby Northney and Thornham.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jul–Sep.
