The eastern part of Chott el Djerid lies at the heart of the largest salt pan in the Sahara, covering a total area exceeding 5,000 square kilometers. This endorheic basin is partially situated below sea level and is characterized by a thick salt crust that shimmers in various colors under the desert sun. During rare rainfall events, the depression fills with a thin layer of water, which quickly evaporates to leave behind bizarre mineral crystals. The area is famous for the Fata Morgana mirage phenomenon, caused by intense heat and light refraction over the level surface. In popular culture, the Chott gained international fame as a filming location for the Star Wars movies, specifically representing the planet Tatooine. An elevated causeway road crosses the expanse, connecting the oases of Kebili and Tozeur. Ecologically, it serves as a critical habitat for migratory birds such as the greater flamingo.

Getting there

This eastern section of the massive salt lake is largely traversed via the causeway road that connects the towns of Kebili and Tozeur. Visitors can simply pull over in their vehicles at designated safe spots along this highway.

Best season

Mid-autumn through early spring is the classic window for crossing the lake, when heat mirages are mesmerizing. During winter, shallow water might gather on the eastern edges, creating remarkable mirror reflections of the sky.

Terrain & paths

The immediate surroundings from the road consist of a blindingly white, heavily cracked crust of mineral salt. The ground directly adjacent to the causeway is firm enough for walks, but the crust quickly thins out further in.

What to bring

Excellent sunglasses and a camera with a good polarizer are highly recommended to capture the strange colors of the salt pans. Appropriate closed walking shoes are needed as the crystallized salt shards can be surprisingly sharp.

Parking

Stopping is done at established viewpoints along the main asphalt road crossing the chott. Small roadside stalls selling souvenirs often mark the widest, safest spots to pull your vehicle completely off the active traffic lanes.

Safety

Never drive your personal vehicle off the elevated tarmac and onto the salt flats, as the soft layers below will inevitably trap the car. When taking photos, be highly mindful of the high-speed traffic passing along the road.

Most travelers spend around twenty to thirty minutes here to stretch their legs, take photographs of the horizon and any local artistic sculptures, before continuing their journey across the expansive, hot desert plain.
