Gabes Coast (Tunisia)

Weather…

The Gulf of Gabès, known in antiquity as Syrtis Minor, is a shallow marine embayment on the eastern coast of Tunisia. It is distinguished by a rare geographical feature: a tidal range of up to two meters, among the highest in the Mediterranean Sea. These tidal fluctuations have led to the development of unique ecosystems, particularly extensive meadows of Posidonia oceanica seagrass, which serve as nursery grounds for numerous fish species. The coastline is characterized by sandy beaches, lagoons, and the mouth of Wadi Gabès, which forms a rare coastal oasis. Economically, the region is highly significant due to traditional fishing practices and the industrial processing of phosphates in the city of Gabès. However, industrial pollution currently poses a serious threat to marine biodiversity and coastal water quality. Despite these challenges, the gulf remains a critical stopover for migratory birds and a center for North African maritime traditions.
