Bab el Bhar (Tunisia)

Weather…

Bab el Bhar, also known as the Porte de France, is one of the most famous historical gates of Tunis, marking the boundary between the ancient Medina and the modern New Town. The gate was originally erected during the Hafsid era in the 13th century but took its current free-standing form in 1848 following modifications under the French colonial administration. It consists of a monumental arch made of light sandstone and once served as a direct access point to the sea, earning it the name 'Sea Gate.' The square surrounding the gate is a lively meeting place where the winding alleys of traditional souks meet the wide boulevards of modern Tunis. As a symbolic gate between East and West, Bab el Bhar represents the multicultural history and economic transition of the city. It is protected by UNESCO as part of the Medina of Tunis World Heritage site.
