Mount Paitchau (Timor-Leste)

Weather…

Mount Paitchau is the highest peak in the Lautém District, situated in the far east of Timor-Leste within the Nino Konis Santana National Park. Standing at approximately 960 meters above sea level, this limestone massif dominates the surrounding landscape and serves as a critical ecological refuge. The region is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity, particularly rare bird species, which led to its classification as an Important Bird Area (IBA). During the Indonesian occupation, the mountain's dense forests provided strategic cover and sanctuary for the Timorese resistance forces. Today, the peak is a focal point for ecotourism and the preservation of the cultural heritage of the local Fataluku people. The vegetation consists of a mix of primary tropical rainforests and dry forests on limestone soils, hosting numerous endemic plant and animal species.
