The city gained global recognition due to the tragic events of World War II, when the Japanese Imperial Army constructed the 'Death Railway' to Burma using Allied prisoners of war and forced Asian laborers. The Bridge over the River Kwai remains a central memorial and a primary destination for historical tourism. Originally, the city was established in the late 18th century by King Rama I as a defensive outpost against Burmese invasions. Beyond its wartime legacy, the region is celebrated for its exceptional natural beauty, including Erawan National Park, famous for its emerald-green seven-tiered waterfalls. Kanchanaburi is a hub for ecotourism and outdoor activities, with floating raft houses on the rivers offering a unique local experience. The province is one of Thailand's largest by land area and houses several massive reservoirs vital for national hydroelectric power.
