Ruaha Valley

The Great Ruaha River Valley in central Tanzania is an ecologically and economically vital region, characterized by diverse semi-arid landscapes and expansive floodplains. The river originates in the Kipengere Range and flows 475 kilometers eastward, forming the heart of Ruaha National Park, East Africa's largest protected area by land mass. Geologically, the valley follows an arm of the Great Rift Valley, resulting in dramatic escarpments and mineral-rich soils. During the dry season, the valley becomes a critical survival sanctuary for massive herds of elephants, buffaloes, and rare antelope species, as the river provides the region's only permanent water source. Economically, the Ruaha Valley is of immense importance to Tanzania's national power grid, feeding the reservoirs for the Mtera and Kidatu hydroelectric plants. In recent decades, however, increased water diversion for upstream agriculture has led to ecological strain and seasonal drying of the river's lower reaches.
