Merelani Tanzanite Mine (Tanzania)

Weather…

The Merelani Tanzanite Mines, located in the Simanjiro District of the Manyara Region, are the only place on Earth where the rare gemstone tanzanite is found. The mining area is divided into several blocks (A through D), with Block C being the most productive area for industrial-scale extraction. Geologically, tanzanite was formed approximately 585 million years ago through metamorphic processes at the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. To curb illegal trade and smuggling, the Tanzanian government erected a 24-kilometer-long perimeter wall around the entire mining site in 2018. Mining is conducted under challenging conditions in deep vertical shafts that often extend several hundred meters underground. Tanzanite is celebrated for its striking pleochroism, displaying blue, violet, and burgundy hues depending on the viewing angle. The mines are a vital source of income for the local population and contribute significantly to Tanzania's prestige in the international gemstone market.
