Khorugh is the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, set at around 2,200 metres at the confluence of the Gunt and Panj rivers, directly across from Afghanistan’s Wakhan Corridor. With about 30,000 inhabitants it is small in size, yet it serves as the political, cultural, and academic centre of the entire Tajik Pamir. The town hosts the region’s only university, a campus of the University of Central Asia largely supported by the Aga Khan Development Network. Its population is largely made up of Pamiri peoples, Ismaili Muslims by faith but linguistically and culturally distinct. Its surprisingly green city park contains one of the highest botanical gardens in the world. Khorugh is also the unavoidable gateway to the legendary M41 Pamir Highway and the supply hub for remote high-altitude valleys such as Bartang, Shugnan, and Wakhan.
