Hobe Fort (Taiwan)

Weather…

Hobe Fort, located in the Tamsui District of New Taipei City, was constructed in 1886 by Liu Ming-chuan, the first governor of Taiwan, following the Sino-French War. The fort was a critical component of Taiwan's coastal defense system, specifically designed to guard the mouth of the Tamsui River and prevent enemy incursions toward Taipei. Its architecture features massive earthwork ramparts and internal casemates that were technologically advanced for the late Qing Dynasty period. Although the fort never saw active combat, it served as a military barracks and storage facility during the Japanese colonial era. In 1985, it was designated a Grade 2 National Monument, preserving its historical significance as a symbol of late 19th-century military engineering. The main gate still bears the calligraphic inscription signifying its role as the "North Key to the Maritime Gate."
