Lion's Head Mountain
Shitoushan, also known as Lion's Head Mountain, is one of the most significant spiritual and geographical sites on the border of Miaoli and Hsinchu counties in northwestern Taiwan. Despite its modest elevation of 492 meters, it is famous for its high concentration of Buddhist and Taoist temples, many of which are built into natural rock caverns. The name originates from the mountain's distinctive shape, which from a distance resembles the head of a reclining lion. Historically, Shitoushan has been a center of religious devotion since the late 19th century, serving as a primary pilgrimage destination. Geologically, the mountain is composed of thick sandstone layers that have eroded over millennia to form prominent overhangs and caves. Hiking trails wind through dense subtropical forests rich in ferns and native songbirds. Today, the area is both a cultural heritage site and a scenic reserve, attracting visitors with its tranquil atmosphere and the seamless integration of traditional architecture into the natural environment. During the spring, the mountain is particularly beautiful as the Tung blossoms cover the landscape in white.
