Bab al-Faraj Clock Tower (Syria)

Weather…

The Bab al-Faraj Clock Tower is one of the most famous landmarks of the northern Syrian metropolis of Aleppo. It was built between 1898 and 1899 during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his accession to the throne. The design was created by architect Charles Chartier and combines late Ottoman architecture with European influences. The tower stands on the site of the former Bab al-Faraj gate, which was once part of the city walls. The structure is approximately 27 meters high and is built from local limestone, adorned with fine stone carvings and decorative elements. Clock faces are located on all four sides of the tower, which formerly displayed both Eastern and Western time. The clock tower was part of a larger modernization project in Aleppo aimed at reshaping the city after the Western model. Despite the severe destruction in Aleppo during the recent conflict, the tower has survived as a symbol of urban identity. It marks the transition between the historical Old City and the city's more modern quarters.
