St. Peter Abbey (Switzerland)

Weather…

Saint-Pierre Cathedral in Geneva is the spiritual heart of the city and a world-renowned historical monument. Constructed between 1160 and 1232 on the remains of earlier Christian basilicas, it represents a fascinating blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The cathedral gained global significance during the 16th-century Reformation when it became the home church of John Calvin, marking Geneva's shift toward Protestantism. Its exterior is distinguished by a 18th-century Neoclassical facade with massive Corinthian columns, a stark contrast to its medieval core. Beneath the cathedral lies one of the most extensive archaeological sites in Europe, revealing ruins that date back to the Roman era. Visitors can ascend the north and south towers for a spectacular view of Geneva, Lake Geneva, and the distant Alps. While the main interior reflects the austerity of the Reformed tradition, the magnificent Maccabees Chapel stands as a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic decoration.
