Jetavanaramaya (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

The Jetavanaramaya stupa in Anuradhapura is a monumental feat of ancient Sinhalese engineering, standing as one of the tallest structures in the world at the time of its completion in the 3rd century AD. Commissioned by King Mahasen (273-301 AD), the stupa originally reached a height of approximately 122 meters (400 feet), making it the third tallest building on Earth after the Great Pyramids of Giza. An estimated 93 million baked bricks were used in its construction, highlighting the advanced technological capabilities and vast labor resources of ancient Sri Lanka. The stupa was the centerpiece of the Jetavana monastery, which represented a distinct school of Buddhist thought that often challenged the established Mahavihara tradition. Archaeological excavations in the surrounding complex have yielded numerous artifacts, such as Roman coins and jewelry from distant lands, proving that Anuradhapura was a major international trading hub. Although its spire partially collapsed over the centuries, Jetavanaramaya remains the largest brick-built structure in the world and a cornerstone of the UNESCO World Heritage city, continuing to inspire awe with its sheer scale.
