Galle Lighthouse (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Galle Lighthouse is the oldest light station in Sri Lanka, located within the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The current structure was completed in 1939 and stands at a height of 26.5 meters, replacing the original lighthouse built in 1848 which was destroyed by a fire. The white concrete tower is strategically situated on the Utrecht Bastion at the southern tip of the fort, providing essential navigational guidance to ships entering Galle Harbour. The facility is operated by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and remains an active part of the country's maritime signaling network. Beyond its functional role, the lighthouse is a major cultural icon and one of the most photographed monuments on the island. Its architectural style reflects the British colonial influence combined with modern engineering standards of the mid-20th century. The surrounding area is densely packed with Dutch and British colonial architecture, illustrating the region's rich maritime history. The tower’s location against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean features a unique visual perspective of the fort's defenses.
