Galle Lighthouse is the oldest light station in Sri Lanka, located within the historic Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visiting
The Galle Lighthouse is located within the fort walls and can be freely viewed from the outside at any time. The interior is typically not open to the public.
Typical hours
Since the lighthouse interior is not accessible, there are no opening hours. The surrounding fort area is open from sunrise to sunset, same as the fort.
Photography
Photography from the outside is possible at any time and is very popular. The white lighthouse against the blue sea makes a classic postcard motif.
Time needed
A short stop of about 15-20 minutes is enough for photos and the sea view. Combine it with your walk through the fort.

The lighthouse is located right on the path through Galle Fort, so combining it with the fort visit is well-suited. The National Museum is also just five minutes away.
Getting there
The lighthouse is at the southern end of the fort and is easily reached on foot. Simply follow the main road through the fort to the coast.
Insider tip
Come in the late afternoon to photograph the white tower in warm light. The view from the nearby bastion onto the lighthouse is especially photogenic.
