Huesca is the capital of its namesake province in northern Aragon, positioned at the base of the Pyrenees mountain range. Known in antiquity as Osca, the city is home to over two millennia of history and briefly served as the capital of the nascent Kingdom of Aragon in the 11th century. The historic heart of the city is dominated by the Gothic Cathedral of Santa María, built upon the site of a former mosque and featuring an impressive monumental altarpiece. Another architectural highlight is the Monastery of San Pedro el Viejo, a premier example of Romanesque design that serves as the final resting place for several Aragonese monarchs. Due to its strategic location, Huesca is widely regarded as the gateway to the Pyrenean national parks, including Ordesa y Monte Perdido, making it a hub for mountaineering and outdoor activities. The city balances its deep cultural roots with modern amenities and a bustling culinary scene famous for its game meats and Somontano region wines. Today, Huesca is a dynamic urban center that continues to celebrate its heritage through events like the Festival of San Lorenzo every August.
