Ibiza Town, locally known as Eivissa, is one of the oldest cities in Europe and a captivating Mediterranean jewel. Its crown jewel is Dalt Vila, the fortified old town perched on a hill, enclosed by massive Renaissance walls commissioned by King Charles V in the 16th century to defend against pirate raids. Since 1999, this historic heart has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wandering through its steep, whitewashed alleys leads visitors to the Cathedral of Santa Maria and numerous hidden viewpoints over the Mediterranean. Below the fortress lies the spirited La Marina district and the old fishermen's quarter of Sa Penya, now the epicenter of the town's social life and famous night parades. The city is a place of stark contrasts, where the quiet, historic charm of the upper town overlooks the glamour of Marina Botafoch, home to some of the world's largest superyachts. As the birthplace of global clubbing culture, it also hosts Pacha, the island's first mega-club, which has defined nightlife since 1973. Ibiza joined the 2024 Balearic-wide anti-tourism protests, with stricter short-term rental rules and fines for illegal hosts. The island government is debating day-visitor caps.
The most pleasant time to visit is May, Jun, Oct.
