Worcester is located about 120 kilometers northeast of Cape Town in the fertile Breede River Valley, framed by the majestic Brandwacht and Du Toitskloof mountain ranges. Established in 1819, the town was named after the Marquis of Worcester, the brother of the Cape Governor Lord Charles Somerset. Worcester quickly became the primary commercial center for the interior of the Western Cape, driven by the region's productive agricultural sector. The town is globally famous for its viticulture and brandy production, housing the KWV Brandy Distillery, which is the largest of its kind in the world. A unique cultural feature of Worcester is its status as a center of excellence for people with disabilities, hosting South Africa's leading schools for the blind and deaf. Additionally, the Karoo Desert National Botanical Garden in the town provides a unique showcase of succulent flora from the arid Karoo region, establishing Worcester as a key scientific and tourism hub.
