Mokopane, formerly known as Potgietersrus until 2003, is situated in the Limpopo province at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains. Founded in 1852 by the Voortrekkers, it was later renamed to honor the local chief Mokopane. The area is of immense paleoanthropological significance due to the nearby Makapansgat Caves, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site 'Cradle of Humankind', which houses fossils of early hominids. Economically, Mokopane is one of the world's most significant platinum mining hubs, driven largely by the massive operations of Anglo American Platinum. Agriculture also plays a fundamental role in the local economy, with the surrounding plains dedicated to farming tobacco, cotton, maize, and citrus, as well as cattle ranching. The town's location on the N1 national road, the primary artery connecting Pretoria to the Zimbabwean border, ensures its status as a vital transit and commercial center.
