Hafun Salt Factory (Somalia)

Weather…

The Hafun Salt Factory is located on the Hafun Peninsula in the Puntland region, about 250 km south of Bosaso. The facility exploits natural salt pans along the coast for solar evaporation of sea salt. Hafun holds one of the largest saltworks in East Africa. The plant was recommissioned in the 1990s after being damaged during the civil war. Annual production is about 50,000 tonnes of salt, exported regionally and to East Africa. The salt is used for both human consumption and industrial purposes. The factory employs about 300 seasonal workers. Challenges include reliance on favorable weather, lack of mechanization, and competition from foreign salt. The Hafun Salt Factory is a key economic driver for the area, providing a rare source of income in an otherwise barren landscape.
