Ugi Island, also known as Uki Ni Masi, is located approximately 9 kilometers north of Makira (San Cristobal). The island is characterized by its rolling hills covered in primary and secondary rainforest and its extensive fringing coral reefs. Ugi holds a significant place in the history of Christian missions in the Solomon Islands, as early outposts were established here during the 19th century. Biologically, the island is highly important, hosting several endemic bird subspecies such as the Ugi monarch. The local economy is based on subsistence farming and fishing, with the island's reefs considered some of the most biodiverse in the region. The coastline is defined by white sandy beaches and small coastal villages where traditional customs remain deeply rooted in daily life. Protecting the terrestrial forests is critical for the conservation of the island's unique avian fauna.

Best season

Ugi Island is best visited in the dry season from June to September when the breeding season of many endemic bird species begins. Reptiles are then also more active and easier to observe.

Best time of day

Early morning endemic birds are loudest and most active, especially in coastal forests. The afternoon heat drives reptiles into shade - look for geckos and skinks on tree trunks.

Etiquette

Do not catch or disturb reptiles or birds as many species are protected. Do not use playback calls or artificial lights near nests to avoid stressing the animals.

What to bring

A binocular with good magnification is essential for birdwatching as is a sturdy tripod for photos. Light-coloured clothing helps not to scare animals and a rainproof jacket is useful.

Getting there

Ugi Island is reachable by boat from the main island of Santa Cruz; the crossing takes about one hour. Simple guesthouses in the villages are run by locals.
