Maribor Cathedral (Slovenia)

Weather…

The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Maribor is the most significant sacred building in Slovenia's second-largest city. Its origins trace back to the 12th century, with construction beginning in the Romanesque style and later being completed in the Gothic style. The cathedral gained its current importance in 1859, when Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek moved the seat of the Diocese of Lavant to Maribor. The cathedral's bell tower was originally 76 meters high, but it was shortened to its current height of 57 meters in the 18th century following a lightning strike. The interior of the church houses several valuable artworks, including the tomb of Anton Martin Slomšek, who was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1999. The cathedral seamlessly blends various architectural periods, from Gothic ribbed vaults to ornate Baroque chapels. Located in Slomšek Square, its silhouette defines the skyline of Maribor's historic center.
