Maroons Church
The Maroons Church, officially known as St. John's Maroon Church, is located in Freetown and was built in the late 18th century by the Maroons, a group of escaped slaves from Jamaica who were resettled in Sierra Leone. The church is an example of the religious and cultural fusion resulting from the Maroons' relocation. The building is a simple, rectangular stone structure with a small bell tower. The church played an important role in the spiritual life of the Maroon community, serving as a place for worship and social gatherings. Today, the Maroons Church is a historic landmark protected by the National Monuments Commission. It is a symbol of the Maroons' resistance to slavery and their contribution to Sierra Leone's culture. The church is open to visitors and features insights into the history of the African diaspora.
