Turtle Islands (Sierra Leone)

Weather…

The Turtle Islands are a remote archipelago of eight small islands, including Yele, Bakie, and Mut, located west of Sherbro Island in the Atlantic Ocean. These low-lying coral islands are surrounded by turquoise waters and extensive sandbanks, making them some of the most isolated places in Sierra Leone. Geographically, they are vital for the conservation of the Green sea turtle, serving as major nesting sites. The inhabitants of the islands lead traditional lives based almost entirely on fishing and boat building, largely untouched by modern infrastructure. Access is challenging and usually involves long trips in motorized pirogues, making the archipelago a destination for adventurers. The islands' fragile ecology is threatened by rising sea levels and overfishing, making protection efforts urgent. Despite these challenges, the islands offer pristine beauty and a unique cultural atmosphere.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The Turtle Islands are a remote archipelago off Sherbro Island and are only accessible by boat. The journey usually starts in Kent on the Freetown Peninsula or in Bonthe, and the trip across the open sea can take several hours and is weather-dependent.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April, when the sea is calm and the sky is clear. During the rainy season (May to October), strong storms and high waves can make the crossing dangerous or impossible.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The eight islands are small, flat sandy islands surrounded by coral reefs and shallow, crystal-clear water. The terrain in the islands' interior consists of fine sandy beaches, coconut palms, and small fishing villages with no paved roads.
🎒
What to bring
As there is little infrastructure on the islands, visitors must bring everything necessary: sufficient drinking water, food, sun protection, insect repellent, and a power bank. Water shoes are helpful for walking safely over coral pieces on the beach.
🅿️
Parking
There are no parking lots on the islands themselves. Vehicles must be left on the mainland, for example in Freetown or Kent, at guarded parking areas before boarding the boat to the islands.
⚠️
Safety
Ensure the availability of life jackets during the boat trip. There is no medical care on the islands; small cuts from coral should be disinfected immediately. Malaria protection and adequate hydration are essential.
⏱️
Time needed
Because of the long journey, a visit is only worthwhile for two to three days or more. Many visitors spend a night in simple accommodations or tents to truly enjoy the remoteness and untouched nature of the archipelago.
