Victoria Clock Tower (Lorloz) (Seychelles)

Weather…

The Victoria Clock Tower, affectionately known in the local Creole language as 'Lorloz,' is the most prominent historical landmark in the capital of Seychelles. It was erected in 1903 to commemorate the memory of Queen Victoria, who had passed away two years earlier, and to celebrate the island's new status as a separate Crown Colony. The structure is a silver-painted iron replica of the clock tower that stands outside Victoria Station in London, which was originally commissioned for the diamond jubilee of the Queen in 1897. Despite its modest height, the tower serves as a symbol of the historical link between the United Kingdom and the Seychelles archipelago. It is located at the intersection of Independence Avenue and Albert Street, marking the geographical and administrative heart of the city. Over more than a century, it has remained largely unchanged, surviving the modernization of the surrounding urban landscape. It is now a national monument and remains the country's most iconic photographic subject.
