Stari Ras was the first capital of the medieval Serbian state of Raška, serving as a cornerstone of early Balkan history. Located near the modern city of Novi Pazar, the site comprises a group of monuments including fortifications, churches, and monasteries. The central fortress of Gradina, perched on a hill overlooking the Raška River, was the principal residence of the Nemanjić dynasty in the 12th century. Ras acted as a vital crossroads for trade and military movements between the Adriatic coast, central Serbia, and Constantinople. The architectural remains showcase a unique blend of Byzantine influences and local traditions, which evolved into the distinctive Raška school of architecture. Along with the Sopoćani Monastery and Peter's Church, Stari Ras was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Archaeological excavations have yielded significant finds, such as Byzantine coins and ornate jewelry, illustrating the court's wealth. It remains a powerful symbol of the birth of Serbian statehood and medieval cultural achievements.
