Gate of Saint Francis (San Marino)

Weather…

The Gate of Saint Francis, also known as Porta San Francesco or Porta del Loco, is the primary historic entrance to the fortified city of San Marino. Originally constructed in 1361, it served for centuries as the main checkpoint for goods and travelers entering the capital. The gate currently houses the headquarters of the Guard of the Rock (Guardia di Rocca), whose members are often seen in their traditional uniforms during guard changing ceremonies. Over the centuries, the structure underwent several modifications, notably in 1451 and 1581, to enhance its defensive capabilities. The inner side of the gate features significant historical inscriptions and the Republic's coat of arms. Geographically, it serves as the symbolic gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage old town and is an essential stop for every tourist. A plaque on the gate also commemorates San Marino's membership in the United Nations.
