Serravalle Castle (San Marino)

Weather…

The Castle of Serravalle, historically often referred to as Castello di Olnano, is one of the most significant defensive structures in San Marino. Located in the northern part of the republic, it served for centuries as a strategic shield against incursions from the Romagna region. Originally held by the Malatesta family, the fortress was incorporated into the republic in 1463 following a successful siege by San Marinese forces. The castle is characterized by its massive defensive walls and the prominent square tower that rises well above the rooftops of Serravalle. Although large portions of the original complex were integrated into the urban fabric over time, the historical lines of defense are still clearly discernible. The castle symbolizes San Marino's military resilience and the final territorial expansion of the 15th century. Today, the area houses administrative offices and is a favored spot for visitors interested in medieval military history.
