Fiorentino Castle Ruins (San Marino)

Weather…

The ruins of Fiorentino Castle are the remnants of a once-mighty fortress that played a pivotal role in the territorial history of San Marino. Originally owned by the Malatesta family of Rimini, the castle served as a strategic border outpost until it was conquered in 1463 during the war between San Marino and the Malatesta. Following the victory, the Council of San Marino ordered the complete destruction of the fortress to prevent its future use as an enemy base. Today, only the foundations, wall fragments, and parts of the cisterns remain on the hilltop, testifying to medieval siege warfare. Archaeological excavations have revealed that the complex consisted of several defensive rings and a central tower. The ruins provide a deep insight into San Marino's transition toward its modern borders and the consolidation of its independence. The site is now a protected historical monument, commemorating the decisive military achievements of the 15th century.
