The ancient settlement of Samata on the western coast of Savai'i is a significant site for researching Samoan prehistory and maritime expansion. The area consists of two main parts, Samata-i-Uta (inland) and Samata-i-Tai (coastal), reflecting the traditional dual settlement structure. Archaeological excavations have revealed complex stone platforms (Paepae) and burial sites suggesting a hierarchically organized society. Samata was historically an important base for trade between Savai'i and island groups located to the west. Its location on a protected lagoon allowed for a stable supply through fishing, while the fertile hinterland enabled intensive agriculture. The site is accessible during daylight as it is unguarded. No official hours exist; daytime visits are recommended to clearly see the terraces. In the dark, the terrain is hard to navigate.
