Between 1905 and 1911, molten lava flows from the volcano swept through the village of Saleaula, eventually breaching the doors of the London Missionary Society church. The lava filled the interior and solidified, creating a rippled black rock floor that remains today within the surviving stone walls. While the roof was consumed by fire and heat, the massive stone exterior and portions of the tower stood firm against the flow. Nearby, the 'Virgin's Grave' marks a burial spot that was mysteriously avoided by the lava, adding a layer of local legend to the site.
