Yelizovo
Yelizovo is often the first point of contact for travelers arriving in Kamchatka, as it hosts the peninsula's international airport. Situated in the Avacha River valley, the town features striking views of the 'home' volcanoes: Koryaksky, Avachinsky, and Kozelsky. While Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is the administrative capital, Yelizovo serves as the logistical hub for nature enthusiasts. It is the main departure point for helicopter excursions to the world-famous Valley of Geysers, one of the most spectacular geothermal fields on Earth. The town has a laid-back vibe and features an excellent local market where visitors can sample fresh caviar, smoked salmon, and wild berries. Nearby, there are ample opportunities for outdoor activities such as fishing, rafting, and visiting indigenous reindeer herding camps. The local museum provides great insight into the unique flora, fauna, and indigenous cultures of the peninsula. The surrounding area is characterized by a raw, untamed nature that immediately captures the imagination. Local dining is centered on seafood, with the massive Kamchatka King Crab being the star attraction. The best time to visit is between July and September for hiking and helicopter tours, or winter for extreme skiing and snowmobile adventures. Given Kamchatka's unpredictable weather, travelers should always include buffer days in their plans. Yelizovo is the good place to gear up for the wilderness and experience your first encounter with the peninsula's volcanic power.
